Okay, I'm intrigued.  This sounds like it will fix my problem once and for all.

I already have the two separate files created.  I guess my next step is look
through my DDS manuals for Multi format logical files.  After I create this,
I need to write a "record format selector" program and link it to the logical
file somehow.

Okay, looks like I got my work cut out for me, thanks!
