You can split it into two physical files, then create a "multi-format LF" over them with the same name as your existing internally described file. To enable the updates, you need to specify a "record selector" program for the LF which is a simple program the system will call for you to dynamically identify and return the record format name (and therefore physical file) to contain the record. Let me guess -- did the A/R programs originate on the S/36 or earlier?
