Geez you guys, give an old coder a break!  OK, I admit it, I'm guilty. ;)

In RPGII you couldn't do *in99 or *on and when you were trying to pull a program
out of a marginal overlay situation (remember program overlays? 64k limits? (2
digit years? <g>)), each left hand indicator saved 3 bytes and the process time
to test.

Stuff like this just let's you know how far back the code's roots go.
