In OPNQRYF don't forget the CPYFMQRYF (copy from query file) that I have used 
to create a hard, sorted file for multiple pass use...

That's true, but not neccessarily as efficient. SQL and OPNQRYF access
data randomly where FMTDTA (or SORT or whatever) physically sorts
the data into a temp file. If you are making more than one pass over the
exact same data (same selection and sort criteria) then FMTDTA can
be quicker as the blocks of records will be faster to retrieve from disk.
