It used to be called "Conversion Reformat Utility;" apparently, it's been
rehabilitated and can now be seen in public as "Sort." Anyway, here's the
link:

The thumbnail sketch is that you write "sort specifications" that describe
the columns you want sorted. You store those specs in a source file like
QFMTSRC. You create your "output file" whether it be an addrout or a
tag-along and then invoke FMTDTA to make a sorted copy of your input file.
An addrout file is a file of record addresses - not data. If you use
addrout files, you need to use a special F spec in your RPG program.
Tag-along sorts are where the sorted data "tags along" with the sort "key
fields." This is generally a copy of your input file, although you can
include only the columns you wish to. Note that FMTDTA does not operate on
field names, but column numbers. You can do record selection as well as
sorting, again based on column numbers.

If you are writing new applications, may I suggest that you look at embedded
SQL first, and if that's not available to you, look at OPNQRYF. Either of
these are more modern than FMTDTA, and will do the same things.
