For old printers, you probably find a printer driver which will work with the caveat of potential reduced functionality. For example, I have an old (bought in 2000) HP PhotoSmart P 1000 printer for which HP decided was too old for supporting on Windows 7.

A quick Google search disclosed that the HP 930 printer drives works perfectly for it on Windows 7, and it does!

I looked at some MFC printers last night on Office Depot's web site. I
don't do a heck of a lot of printing (I bought a case of paper last year;
still on the first ream) so I was looking for something relatively cheap.

This one is for SOHO usage so it would be directed attached, not networked.
But I do some occasional System i work so I would need to define it through
System i Access as a 5250 printer.

So I went to the IBM Printer page to check out the connections. I applaud
IBM for having hundreds (thousands?) of printers on the pages - but none of
the printers at which I looked. Keeping the page updated is probably a
losing battle, but I'd hate to get something that couldn't be connected via
5250 emulation.

If this is for home/SOHO usage, I like the HP OfficeJet 8600 family. You
can get them for $120-150 and they do the print/scan (including
OCR)/copy/fax, have good speed, duplex, etc. Connect via USB, Ethernet, or
WiFi.

The 8000 family's advantage over lower end/cheaper units is that they're
more efficient on ink usage. So they're cheaper to operate.

Sounds like a good excuse to go out and buy a decent printer. Heck,
might even get one with a scanner/copier; but, then, I wouldn't have

You might also want to make sure the printer has Win7 drivers before
trying the parallel-USB adapter. Some peripheral manufacturers used
the change in driver models that occurred when Vista came out (further
refined by Win7 &
8) as an opportunity to end support for older models (in an attempt to
spur new sales).
