Also, if you're using an older DOCSIS 2 cable modem, consider upgrading to
DOCSIS 3 if your ISP supports it.  When I did my throughput nearly doubled
even though I did nothing else to the service.  Under DOCSIS 2 I peaked
around 14MB down; now I'm int he mid to upper 20MB down with no change in
the plan or $ I spend on it.

I had been thinking about getting a cable modem anyway to avoid the
monthly lease charges, so I installed a DOCSIS 3.0 modem here over the
weekend but left my service plan alone. My speeds didn't change
drastically, but they have become very consistent. Virtually every
time I have tried regardless of time of day over the last 3 days, my
download speeds have always been between 30 and 31 Mbps, upload just
over 3.5Mbps, and 6-8ms ping times.

I used to average around 24-28Mbps down but drop to the teens during
peak periods, and ping times generally over 20ms. The modem lights
indicate I am getting a bonded dual channel download, so that may help
explain the apparent new found consistency to my speeds. Only time
will tell if that remains to be true.

Comcast now charges $7/mth modem lease where I live, so the modem will
pay for itself in 13 months. With a one year warranty anyway, I can't
go too wrong. (For the record, I installed a Motorola SB6121.)
