Firefox remains active after closing

Hi all,

as of a couple of days, I'm experiencing some strange stuff on my home PC (3GHz P4 with 3GB Ram, WinXP SP2).

Every time I close FireFox 3, it stays active in Task Manager and eats up most of my CPU.

Also, the PC will freeze (as in become totally unresponsive) after a period of time.

I googled this, and several posts indicate a virus problem, however my AVG 8 cannot find anything wrong except for some tracking cookies.

Has anybody experienced this FF behaviour, and if so, found a solution for it?
