I am an RPG programmer and want to learn C++ also. I think I have read more books on C++ then RPG. But all of the books are on the syntax of C++ and use console programs (pretty much batch programs with DSPLY). Nothing really using GUI programs. Installing only gcc is like installing the RPG compiler without SEU or SDA (at least to me it is, let me know if I am wrong).
I looked at the free versions of Microsoft visual studio, but not real sure I want to be tied to Microsoft (the CLR or whatever it is called can run on other OSs). But it does have a fair number of books on using it, more on C# version then C++ version.

I looked at QT http://www.trolltech.com/ even have two books on it. But the pricing
http://www.trolltech.com/products/qt/licenses/pricing was more then I wanted to pay for something I was not sure how much I would use. I think you can use it on Linux under GPL.

Other IDEs I have NOT looked at but want to
http://www.codeblocks.org/
http://wxdsgn.sourceforge.net/index.php which uses wxWidgets (cross platform)
http://wxwidgets.org/

If you do find something that works let me know.

I'm a bang-up RPG wiz :) but want to get going on the PC side, and diversify more..

I want to do some PC programming. My plan is to use the GCC compiler, and work at C++. Can someone point me to a -->good<-- tutorial, step by step, for setting it up, handling the supporting libraries, DLL and all that....I've seen a bunch out there, just need pointers, and mostly just to get pointed in the right direction and little help just getting started with it...
