Your call. I refuse to actually recommend a Compaq. 7200 RPM notebook disks are listed at http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php/page_id=11/popup6%5B%5D=2: 109/popup4%5B%5D=30:392 . I see a 100GB 7200 RPM Hitachi for just over $150. $130 for 80GB. Try this: Buy the notebook ($700), the faster drive ($130), backup or disk imaging software like Norton Ghost ($26 for 100% legal OEM version: http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/details.asp?productID=1795 ), and a 2.5" USB-powered external drive enclosure (maybe $25). Install the fast drive in the enclosure & connect to the notebook. Clone the slow drive to the fast drive & then swap the disks (or simply reinstall on the fast drive). Ending config: slow in enclosure, fast in notebook. Now use the slow drive to back up the fast drive periodically or as a general purpose external USB-attached/USB-powered portable drive. Overall about $900 for the notebook with a fast drive + an 80GB slow drive in an external enclosure. Check the warranty, though. If you or anyone else is seriously considering this, send me an off-list email for the OfficeMax Friends & Family discount flyer PDF. It's necessary to get the notebook @ $700 ($200 off). There's also a $30 MIR; original notebook price is $930. John A. Jones, CISSP Americas Information Security Officer Jones Lang LaSalle, Inc. If you know anyone at OfficeMax, they're having a Friends and Family discount sale today & tomorrow. One of the featured items in the flyer is a Compaq notebook. AMD Turion 64 CPU, 1GB RAM, 80GB drive,

LCD, XP Home, Wireless, etc. for like $700. Nice deal, really, until you dig a little. I went to Compaq's site and saw the drive was, you guessed it, 4200 RPMs. Totally spoils the potential performance of the machine.
For a deal like that, would it be worthwhile to buy one at that price and just replace the HD? - Dan -- This is the PC Technical Discussion for iSeries Users (PcTech) mailing list To post a message email: PcTech@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/pctech or email: PcTech-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/pctech.
