O.k., the latest regarding the problems reported yesterday for my XP box at
home:
I deleted the VPN connection. No more dialog box prompts asking to connect
via VPN.
However, was still losing connection to the internet *intermittently*
("couldn't find www.google.com <http://www.google.com>" or any number of
other web sites, wait a few minutes and then able to reach them again). Ran
network diags, and the attempts to ping the router failed! IPCONFIG showed
valid IP addresses. So I turned off Symantec's Firewall; I couldn't find
anything in the configuration that sounded like it would cause the problem,
so I turned it off. That ended the problem of losing connections. It was
late, and I still want to investigate Symantec's support to see if it has
anything on this problem, but for now, I'm using Microsoft's firewall. I may
just download ZA and try that.
After turning off Symantec's firewall, but before turning Microsoft's back
on, I recreated the VPN connection, following the same instructions I had
for the Win98SE box. Again, as before, no problems making a VPN connection.
I "edited" the .RDP for the RD connection to verify the information. Still
could not make a connection; had the same error as I reported yesterday.
Note that there is NO firewall active at this point.
So I am still perplexed by this.
Per David's question, I forgot to note the brand/model of the router.
One of the frustrations trying to compare the network connections between
the Win98SE box and the XP-Home box is that the dialogs are completely
different and, in some cases, I was unable to adequately match stuff on the
Win98SE box to the XP-Home box.
Advice / admonitions / pity welcomed. Wait, scratch pity.
TIA, Dan
