LOL - what fun.

Well my user was THRILLED to hear what you had to explain and I suggested he
try going back to 800 x 600 and all is well.

Thanks again.

Chuck

Yes, it is incredible. I had this same conversation with a local Dallas
sports personality, Dale Hansen. Dale is a 50 something white guy who almost
always says what he means, so he's been fired a few times from other
stations.
It started out when Dale said, "I'm the computer idiot who can't turn the
dang thing on, but in my business, I have to use it now. Can't they just
make it simple enough that I can see what I want to see without having a
magnifying glass. These eyes are old enough as it is." You know it went down
hill from there, but he's a great person, so I spent about an hour talking
to him and walking him through changing the resolution on his desktop and
back.
Having been friends with him for as long as I have, I felt sorry for him
because AH Belo, the parent company of the station he works for outsourced
their help-desk support. There's not a chance that the Cornhusker who has
been in Texas for 30 years could possibly understand those people. I just
laugh and say, "Ok, Dale. From the top, one more time..."

That's is really incredible. Nice to know a site could care less about their
users, eh ?

Yes, Chuck it's incredibly difficult... Not...
In JavaScript 1.2 or above, it would look like:
var winX = screen.width;
var winY = screen.height;
if (winX <= '640') {... yada... yada...

UNREAL !

Thanks so much John. That does indeed explain this "weird" behavior ! Is it
that hard to check for something like that and adjust ? I wouldn't think so
since EVERYONE ELSE seems to be doing it... And for THAT site of all sites
considering they are GUARANTEED to have among THE most diverse of people and
PC's (i.e. OS's and browser versions, etc.) of any...

Thanks !

Chuck

Chuck, Mike,
This is caused by the site not checking the resolution prior to rendering
the page to the browser. A resolution of 1024x768 or higher will cause
"Fitted" HTML to display on the left side of the browser. ESPN has always
been guilty of this, despite my many e-mails and offers to fix it for them.

That is why I always check up to this resolution for any web-sites that I
do.

Make sure he has all the latest patches installed. If that doesn't work,
tell him to use Mozilla, that should work.

Subject: [PCTECH] Problem with a new Compaq and 17" flat screen

Hi Folks,

Had one of the salesman query me just now; he purchased a new Compaq desktop
PC this weekend with a 17" monitor and all was fine. He fired up IE and went
to ESPN's website (so read in more detail about our Colt's mess yesterday.)
and it only showed on about 2/3's of the screen with the right hand side
"missing". So he went to PC World and ZDNET and it was fine on them. Then he
went to Comcast (his cable provider) and it showed even smaller and in the
very middle of the screen.

And here we go with offshore support. He called Compaq tech support and
spoke to 6 different people and said he could basically understand none of
them (accents). This is no knock on our international friends ! He is a
patient person but ended up hanging up on them. As he noted, the sad thing
is, he gives up on tech support and is willing to live with the problem. I
am get him the URL for Compaq's web-based tech support because I have never
had any problems with them.

So does anyone have any idea what would be causing this behavior ?

Thanks,

Chuck
