No need to use C, unless you already are. Easily done in RPGLE - basically, all C/C++ library functions can be called in RPGLE. Before 6.1 we had to include BNDDIR('QC2LE'), starting with 6.1 we no longer need to.

"Setting an envvar" reminds me about a totally different topic. Up to now, I thought envvars were scoped to qsh or PASE. Now I read:

So I understand, envvars are not scoped to qsh or PASE, and can be retrieved with getenv() in e. g. ILE C?
