While IBM i can use WINS, I almost never see it done. Up to V7R4 could also be a WINS server and I can say I’ve never seen that.

Must faster and easier to make the directory and it provide a small bit of documentation.

However, it has been established for decades that "network browsing" through broadcasts is highly unreliable, especially when many clients are involved. Microsoft has therefore invented the concept of a central "browsing server", called WINS. I haven't found evidence that QNTC configuration supports specifying a WINS server.

All in all, manual directory creation seems preferable because probably more reliable.
