When you have something in WRKMLBSTS you generally do NOT vary on the tape
devices shown in
WRKCFGSTS CFGTYPE(*DEV) CFGD(*TAP)
They will conflict.
The indentations on WRKMLBSTS are different than those shown in WRKCFGSTS
CFGTYPE(*DEV) CFGD(*TAP)
With a TS2900 you will have a single drive indented on WRKMLBSTS. Too bad,
as it would be quite easy to do a DUPTAP with a multiple drive library
instead of multiple saves. Sure you can do one to a virtual media but it's
not as cool.

can you confirm you have a Tape Media Library (mlb) defined, or are you
saving using just a tape device (like TAP01)?

At the moment, it's just TAP01 that's varied on and in use daily.
However, there's a TAPMLB01 also configured, but varied off. I'll be
tinkering with these today.

The TS2900 can be set to autoload the next tape into the drive, without a
Tape Media Library by setting Sequential Mode.

Yeah, I saw that already, but I have a stranger hope.

I want to do a 'save critical files' to one tape, then switch to a
different one for the 'full' backup. The full one will go offsite; the
other one will stay here so that developers can recover from oopsies. It
wouldn't be my first dumb idea lol.

We can easily get two full saves on a single LTO7 cartridge; overflowing
onto the next volume isn't a concern.
