What exactly did you do? Connect to localhost? Or the address of one of the ethernet lines?

I wonder what would happen if I did it from Windows with Putty and just waited?

Sure enough, after about 90 seconds, the service ready message popped up.

Something's definitely not right here.

Now the question is why so long? If I telnet with port 23, the response is almost instant.

Next step would be to look out for job logs of the SMTP service itself. There can be a multitude of reasons. Maybe this is related to certificates for the SMTP server not being in place?
