Not sure. Everytime I see "exec sql" in an embedded sql rpg program, I
understand there will be a call to the engine, even when you are calling a
scalar, light, simple sql function and to me that is expensive. Correct me
if I'm wrong. Neither am I sure if tailoring a BIF like this is also
expensive.

I was also thinking about yet another option for it. Say the first
argument is the number of spaces. And what about a second, optional one
that would take the character that you'd like to stuff in?

example

stmfSring = var1 + %SPACES(50) + var2 + %SPACES(80: '*') +
%SPACES(20:*TAB) + var3;

Not only elegant, but very useful I think.

With this, I would also say that the best name for the BIF is %STUFF.

Team, these are only ideas. We don't have to spend so much time discussing
them. It's only opinions and votes. I don't use IBM Ideas because I
always get issues with my login, so maybe someone interested could post it
on my behalf.

Democracy is about surveys and votes.

Thanks.

There is no need for any SQL in this use case (just returning spaces).

Yes, but, question: calling SQL to do that,is it not expensive?

You have a SPACE scalar function in SQL ... so just use embedded SQL and
you
have the function.

Subject: Proposal for New RPG BIF

Team,

Honestly, I didn't want to go and look for the already posted proposals
for
new TRs in RPG.

If this already exists and was rejected, just throw me a lot of rotten
eggs
(LOL).

I am thinking of a new BIF: %SPACES(nSpaces)

This would help a lot to stuff in a string a number of spaces when
concatenating several pieces of other strings.

Example:

stmfString = var1 + %SPACES(50) + var2 + %SPACES(20);

The literal number of spaces can also be a variable containing a valid
positive value for the number of spaces to stuff in.

Opinions? (Or rotten eggs).

Thanks,

JS
