Hello Jim,

True enough, but with today's equipment we rarely see CPU usage or memory constraints like we used to prior to P7. Since P8 there has been so much extra horsepower available I'm not sure it matters to all but a very few shops.

While you are right in general, it's shocking to realize how this precise mindset of "we have plenty of CPU cycles nowadays, why care?" yields a much higher energy consumption than necessary on a world wide scale, not limited to just IBM POWER. Thus I still see reasons to strive for efficiency in code. If everybody writing code on this world gave this just a little more thought, this surely would have a measurable impact.

Don't get me started about the AI "training" process. To sometimes yield an "AI" I often perceive as toy. Picture generators, etc.

Sometimes I miss the old times where machines were severely constrained and forced us to be creative and mindful to squeeze the optimum performance out of limited CPU power. At least, that's one of the reasons batch processing survived for a much longer time than those interactive guys predicted. :-)

Maybe I'm getting old…

:wq! PoC
