I'm convinced that what they *really* want you to use either their
WebMail interface, or their proprietary application, instead of a *real*
email reader like T-Bird.
I seriously question the security in having authentication based on the
box, rather than on the user.
At any rate, if I remember right, Google shut down password
authentication for regular "@gmail.com" addresses some time ago, but
kept it in place for whatever GMail service we're under. As I recall, I
do occasionally have to make a server-side adjustment for our Trac
system to still be able to send out email, though.
