I'm convinced that what they *really* want you to use either their
WebMail interface, or their proprietary application, instead of a *real*
email reader like T-Bird.

We're talking about sending email, though. T-Bird, web interface, etc...
they all use the same APIs/authentication. I have used the GMail web
interface for years. I can find emails sent 10 years ago with a simple
search in seconds. I gave up on PC based clients years ago. We all have
our preferences.

T-Bird is no more "real" than other email clients.

I seriously question the security in having authentication based on the
box, rather than on the user.

I don't follow this. Authentication is done during communications between
your email client and your email server. Using Auth/PW or OAuth, the
authentication is stored on the "box" whether it's your PC, IBMi, or phone.

At any rate, if I remember right, Google shut down password
authentication for regular "@gmail.com" addresses some time ago, but
kept it in place for whatever GMail service we're under. As I recall, I
do occasionally have to make a server-side adjustment for our Trac
system to still be able to send out email, though.

Yes, that is correct. You are most likely under GMail for business, as am
I. Normally the only change needed is changing the password used.
