Where this does tend to fall short is when the sizes of the columns in the view changes. And they actually start taking advantage of the new size. Using my previous example of item number expanding from 15 to 35 characters. A view created over the old version, then a DS compiled into a RPG program based on this old view. Now the view gets reassigned to the new table. Either you will experience truncation errors or you will have to recompile the program for the DS.
Sure, you can try dancing while plate twirling with one hand and juggling flaming batons and running chainsaws with the other just to prove that it can be done.
But sometimes it's better to just buckle down and do it right.
