I've written a lot about IBM i application modernization over the last 20
years. My company creates and licenses IBM i-based applications for
schools, school districts, and state school boards. We also license a
framework for ILE RPG developers, which includes support for deploying
browser user interfaces. Feel free to contact me privately if you'd like to
learn more about that.

http://rd.radile.com/rdweb/documentation/home.html shows some documentation
for some of our applications, which includes screen-shots and snippets that
illustrate the breadth and variety of UI design patterns that maximize
end-user productivity. What good is "modernization", if it doesn't improve
user experience, functionality, and the code-base of applications
themselves?

That link points to a simple application that enables users to browse a
"library", which may contain a drop-down selection of "books". A book's
table of contents is displayed in a left-hand panel, while a book's "pages"
are displayed in a right hand panel. A book's table of contents contains
descriptive "chapter" and "page" references, which may expand and contract
as users navigate book content. Arrow-Up and Arrow-Down keys, along with
point and click options enable users to navigate a book's content.

If you wanted to deploy an interface like that, would a screen scraper or
any tool based on RPG open-access help you? I'd actually suggest it would
rather hinder you, by giving a false hope that it could help, when the tool
would have been in effect, a waste of time and colossal waste of money.

Hi All,

I am looking for recommendations on packages we can use to modernize from
Green Screen to GUI.
I am not looking for just a screen scraper although it could be used
during the conversion.

We got a price from Profound and it is WAY too expensive for a 1-2
developer shop.
I know it is wonderful product but there is no way I am even going to
present it to the owner, just not cost effective for 1-2 developers.

Looking for what are all the options and why you like them.
Want as little current RPG code changes as possible but will do what is
needed to move forward.

Vendor opinions are welcome.
