Hi Jerry

I think we are closer to an answer - the example you gave from that article was for a member of a physical file, not really something in an IFS directory. That's good to know!

So for your question - in WRKLNK - I believe you use that to see the CSV file - put an 8 on it - this will tell you the CCSID - it says Coded character set ID, I think, not sure what that is in Spanish. I assume you are using a Spanish system.

If that value is 37, it is US EBCDIC, Spanish EBCDIC is 284, I just read. If it is the same as your job CCSID, it is likely EBCDIC. If it is something like 1252 or 5348, it is ASCII - if 1208, it is UTF-8.

If it is EBCDIC, you want to use the ASC command in your FTP steps - if ASCII or UTF-8, use BIN, as suggested.

From Windows, you want to do something like the following -

Connect with FTP to the IBM i
Type each of the following and press enter after each
QUOTE SITE NAM 1
ASC (if you have EBCDIC on the i) or BIN (if you have ASCII or UTF-8)
GET /Yourdirectory/yourfile.csv

That should do it - if it doesn't work, you might have another CCSID - this link gives you the CCSIDs you can have - https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.4?topic=information-ccsid-values-defined-i

Hope this helps
Vern

1. How can I know if the IFS file which I am trying to download using FTP
is in EBCDIC or in ASCII or in some other format ?

2. How can I do DSPFFD on a file which is present on IFS location within
directory and subdirectories ?

Thanks

Bryan asked what is the CCSID of the file on the IBM i - please give us
that value.

Also, the example you show is for a member of a file in a library - that
is the IFS path for an object in a library. So please run DSPFFD over
that file and give us the result.

Is YOURFILE.FILE a source physical file?

It is possible that, if the file is in EBCDIC and if you use BIN, the
file on the PC will look like garbage.

So we need more information like this to help more.

Vern

Jerry, please insert a BIN command in your FTP script before the GET and

Well you should then know that it depends on the encoding that you are
using to produce your csv file. IBM i uses EBCDIC normally and that is
totally different from ASCII. But the strange thing is that when you
FTP
to an IBM i system, if you DON'T explicitly use the BIN command before
your
download, it automatically converts your EBCDIC data to ASCII. What
you
may be experiencing is the opposite: you may be producing your csv data
in
actually ASCII or CCSID 1208 or the like and you are FTPing without the
BIN
command which would cause your FTP connection to translate
automatically
to
ASCII and that is indeed weird and a total mess. That's the strange
characters you may be seeing.

No , I get kind of junk values when I try to open this csv file on my

If your final goal is to preserve the original data's encoding,
say,
ASCII,
then you only have to send a BIN command to the FTP connection.
Is
that
what you're asking?
Sorry, but it looks too trivial.

Hi,

Can we download a csv file using FTP in such a way that after

it's format should not be disturbed and should be in a good

like it is in IBM i ?

Thanks
