There's a lot to be said for doing it yourself using utilities like the IFS stuff provided by Scott Klement. One main one being handling exceptions. Here's one example. Back when our ERP package was limited to 15 character item numbers we would run into problems with importing from one shop floor package. One guy there loved to create/modify item numbers in that package to be greater than 15 characters. When you used a mass import utility it would blow up and it was always a bear finding what row was bad.
When you use a roll your own you can handle granularity and build in your own exception process. Not as easy when using CPYFRMIMPF, etc.
And why waste the cycles converting from excel to csv, csv to DB2, DB2 transaction file to process when you can do it with one process?
