Producing both a hosts and resolve.conf file in the /etc directory off root finally allowed us to resolve ip/dns.

Glad you've sorted it out.

I'm pretty sure, /etc/hosts isn't needed at all. In addition the resolver configuration is called /etc/resolv.conf (with only one e) which is very important.
