but /etc/hosts is needed... if i rename the file and run the "script" it
does not resolve...

also, i was just curious whether it is resolv or resolve... so with it
named anything (ie. resolve.conf, resolv.conf, resolverename.conf, it still
resolves the ip/dns... so... I'm concluding I really don't need the
resolv.conf at all... only the hosts file.

Glad you've sorted it out.

I'm pretty sure, /etc/hosts isn't needed at all. In addition the resolver
configuration is called /etc/resolv.conf (with only one e) which is very
important.
