As Jim does we have one partition with all the PTFs for i 6.1 and up. Each is exported and available to any other partition through the service tools lan interface and a network based virtual optical device.

Also on that partition are custom made DSLO images for i 6.1 through i 7.4. These are already PTFd as Jim mentions and are also exported and available through network virtual optical.

Now the Upgrade thing requires an additional step and that is starting the TFTP server and also correctly verifying the image catalog on that host partition with NFSSHARE(*YES) so that the boot images are available for the upgrade.

Further remember that with an on-partition image catalog you start the upgrade with POWRDWNSYS (etc etc) but with the network setup you need to STRNETINS.

Once it is set up you will love this and if you have more than a handful of partitions you are silly not to consider this setup.

Sure is.

Easy enough, and fast if you use the internal LAN. If you need to go across the network of course that will slow it down a little.

So the network install uses the images on the IFS of one specific
partition. Then we use SST on the system being upgraded to point to the
source images. Is that the gist of the process?

There’s a really easy way to do that.

The HMC can act as the source, but, and it’s a big one, it will not change
DVD images when needed like an image catalog. That will drive you to
distraction really quickly.

Consider using the network install. Now you can run multiple upgrades at
once. The network install is really easy to set up and run. Just google
“network install IBM i”.

Now the kicker, if you want to avoid doing the PTF apply after the
upgrade, then build one partition, and PTF it. Next use option GO LICPGM
40 to create your own distribution media. Use that image instead of the
downloaded ones. When the upgrade finishes, it will be completely done.

Suppose I wanted to perform OS upgrades or install PTFs on 25 systems.
Would it be possible to do this using images stored on the HMC rather
than
copying the images to each individual system? Has anyone actually done
this? Any experience reports appreciated!
