Hello James,

BTW, are there any pictures of what a 1/2" reel tape drive even *looks like* on an AS/400?

Not really, but I can offer this: http://www.pocnet.net/computer/as400/

(Photos from when a colleague and I dismantled a B30 in spring 2000, having been put out of service after y2k, at a former employee's server room.)

I faintly remember the tape drive being the huge black box (third case from atop). The spools were lying flat, as with an old audio reel-to-reel tape drive. Picture this being turned 90° to better match the depth of the case instead of the width. If my memory serves me right, you could slide the drive mechanics out for changing reels.

You can also see it here for the B30 on the photo: https://www.cnxcorp.com/blog/wild-evolution-as400-ibm-i

Apart from that, I have not found any photos.

:wq! PoC
