I'm guessing if this wasn't true then you wouldn't have this issue. Pretty sure that SOMETIME during that interval a new PTF would have came out to upgrade firmware.
Unless, of course, that version of OS is so old that it's been unsupported that long.
The cover letter for MH01672 indicates that it is for 7.1 or 7.2.

But I would probably stick with what comes down with the latest cume and groups just for compatibility reasons.
