We interdict the user's response and send the message to *SYSOPR. Then we
get to enter the actual response.

I always patch the program so it doesn't happen again, but no one else
bothers.

Does anyone know if there is a way to require a "response" on these
messages?

No matter how much we preach, users will inevitably press <enter> through
the message. Would be nice if there was a way to require a valid response
(C D I R), etc. and NOT accept <enter> as a "C".

Only cure is more programming-- monitor for the messages, add error
checking, etc. etc. Prevent the message from ever seeing the light
of day!

When I write a program that has to interact with a human (ie get a
response), I ask-- is there any way the information can be found
without bothering someone to type in the run date or the first
invoice number in the run. Only after 2 or 3 iterations of "where
can I find that info" does the inquiry bubble up to a human.

Similarly, a MONMSG in CLP will prevent a 1st level error from
interrupting things. You can intercept errors in RPG and other
languages as well-- use the error indicator for disk errors, etc.
And NEVER do you want to see a "Divide by Zero" error!

Of course-- if you don't have access to the source code...

I did, but it did not return anything helpful (we are at V7R3).

To answer your other questions: I tried different search terms, including
"iseries", "ibm I", "system I" but found nothing about PFA fonts. I did
find some pages that referred to the PFB font files in
/QIBM/ProdData/OS400/Fonts, but nothing about using PFA fonts in stead of
PFB, nothing about availablility of PFA fonts, nothing about any products
or options I need to install to be able to use PFA fonts. To be honest, I
never even heard about PFA and PFB fonts before today.

We are converting the spoolfiles to PDF using a third party product called
CoolSpools. The PDF is created as a valid PDF/A-1a document so I don't
think the problem is with this application (but I have asked them for
advice anyway).

Did you try searching the PTF cover letters for 5770TS1 for your release

Hi,

We are required to create PDF files that are compliant with the PDF/A-1a
format. We are using third party software to create those documents and
most validators on the web confirm the output is PDF/A compliant.

However, our documents are being rejected because the embedded fonts are
PFB (Printer Font Binary) fonts as opposed to PFA (Printer Font ASCII)
fonts. The fonts are supplied by our IBM i and not by the third party
software. We are only using Helvetica and Helvetica-Bold.

I have tried searching the web for using PFA fonts on an iseries, but have
not been able to find anything. Does anyone here know if this is possible
and if so, how? Or maybe someone can point me in the direction of
documentation related to this subject (I did find information explaining
PFA and PFB in general, but nothing related to IBM i).

Regards,
Erwin Donker
