For me until VS Code can handle native source members and debugging, it
can't be more than a curiosity.

Seems there could be some interesting plugins, but the developer market
for these plug-ins seems a little niche

There are at least a couple already. The most "fleshed out" is
probably this one:

https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=NielsLiisberg.RPG

There's also

https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=barrettotte.ibmi-languages

Someone else wrote this blog post about a VS-Code-centric workflow for IBM
i:

https://www.anandk.dev/2020/11/VSCode-IBMi-AS400.html

All of those are mentioned in this IT Jungle article:

https://www.itjungle.com/2020/12/09/vs-code-provides-another-coding-option-for-ibm-i/

I would say the state of VS Code support for RPG and CL programming on
IBM i is still fairly weak, especially compared to RDi, but there's
enough there to be interesting.
