Many messages have default reply values by default. My guess is that when a user presses enter without giving a reply, the default value is used instead. You could try changing the default value on the message to *NONE and see if that solves your problem, but be aware that the default value is also used in jobs that are submitted with INQMSGRPY(*DFT). This could be as a SBMJOB parameter or taken from the JOBD so you might create more problems than you are solving.

I agree with Paul that the better option is to monitor for messages and handle them from within the program.

I don't think so... I would not have a default reply value setup.

If the user gets an interactive error, when they press <enter> it replies with a C (without them physically typing "C").

I would like a way to force the user to type one of the valid responses rather than just simply pressing <enter>.

Are you talking about messages with a " Default reply value"?

Does anyone know if there is a way to require a "response" on these messages?

No matter how much we preach, users will inevitably press <enter> through the message. Would be nice if there was a way to require a valid response (C D I R), etc. and NOT accept <enter> as a "C".
