man i feel I am almost there though...

/usr/bin/iconv -f IBM-37 -t IBM-273 '/www/coreihhtp/conf/httpd.conf'
'/www/coreihhtp/conf/new_httpd.conf'
iconv: 0791-004 cannot open converter

I'm sure it boils down to me floundering around in Unix command syntax. :)
I tried it with and without the quotes on the file path above... both say
"cannot open converter"...

/usr/bin/iconv -l shows you all the possibilities ... good luck.

call qp2term gets you in there as well, right?

i used the whole path in qp2term and it got hung up on the ccsid
parameter
- i'm not specifying it right...

To prevent this post from going haywire with me asking for simple syntax
directions I'll go research on my own at this point. thanks jack!

Jack... very slick... but do i need to qualify the whole path for the
httpd.conf?
such as '/www/coreihttp/conf/httpd.conf'

Basic Unix-y stuff ... you can use an aboslute path for both arguments,
or
just cd from directory to directory and do them individually.

Do you know how to ssh into your IBM i and use the bash shell?
