Hello Joep,

Whether C can read streamfiles has nothing to do with that; RPG has had that capability for ages.

It hadn't in V4R5. I don't want to argue if ca. 20 years are "ages". :-)

The discussion was about transferring source members to stream files, which is feasible nowadays because many compilers have added the possibility of compiling from source in the IFS.

Not exactly. The discussion started with a question from Jim F. asking *how to archive members* in a way for later lookup of program logic ("… searchable and easy to view. We expect occasional verification of logic for years to come."). Compiling or further development was not a mentioned point. Also, see subject.

Jim O. kicked in by suggesting to "just move" the source into the IFS and then move everything to the final destination. That's why I asked how this should be done, since files with members are not supported outside of QSYS.LIB. In a later message, I emphasized that Jim F. was asking explicitly about file members. Then, Jim O. was suggesting to "just move" each member, without further elaboration of the "how". Actually extracting the files to IFS is what I see as a major task. Meanwhile, others have been helpful in actually reading the initial message and suggesting ways for easy migration of file members to IFS files.

Why Jim O. decided to bring in actual development related arguments is beyond me, because that was never a requirement from Jim F.

I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think that was possible in V4R5.

It is possible with C, but not with (ILE) RPG. Verified (again) today for the sake of correct statements. I didn't really put my hands on CL or COBOL yet.
