Sounds like typical marketing excuses. Newer hardware usually means faster processors, more CPU cores (for more parallel processing), more and faster RAM, more and faster permanent storage. I don't see anything special in newer hardware which is required to support features of the software. As Frank Soltis himself wrote in his books: The AS/400 (and their successors) is/are software-defined. Not hardware-defined.

No, they do not do it out of vindictiveness, but to peddle new iron. Iron and support for the iron is what generates revenue for IBM. Mind the M in their name. IBM is just another company trying to maximize profit to satisfy stock analysts, and shareholders.

(Vindictively is what they do with their aftercharges when you opt out of a service contract.)
