I tend to agree with this. Document the process extensively. To the point where if you had to rebuild the system from scratch you could.
We used vouchers from buying a Power system to have our BP do this for us the first time. I've done this for the upgrades since. Not that hard. I've even muddled through a few VIOS upgrades.

I've never backed up a VIOS partition. Trusting instead on the rebuild from scratch. Again, it's not that hard. You'd probably spend more time trying to figure out how to do a restore.
