You will also need a properly configured NPIV capable fibre switch.

I was SO happy to be rid of SAS/SCSI tape controllers and go to fiber channel. Then having that virtualized by VIOS and being able to perform backups on multiple lpars simultaneously was awesome. Even with your existing TS3100, providing you switched it to FC and have multiple drives in that library.
The HOURS of downtime every quarter eliminated by that was fantastic!

When you happen to have VIOS, create a NPIV based config so you can

We don't have VIOS. We have i hosting i, with one host and three guest
LPARs. We only have two tape drives in our TS3100, and only two SAS
controllers. So we resort to DLPARing the SAS controllers, and only one
LPAR can use our TS3100 at a time. That has proved to be inconvenient at
times. We definitely have room for improvement.

Also check out Quadstor as an alternative to get started with VTL.

I've been checking it out, and have mentioned it to the powers that be.
