Here we have been on an S34 first, I believe - that was in the 1970's,
and there is still code written then. This was before the company was
acquired by Ecolab. Then an S38, and then an AS/400. I have not asked
how that name change worked, there are a few people here who have been
here since before the acquisition. I just might ask!
Users call it the 400, due to long usage of the term. I and others have
successfully got the IBM i name into the air around here, to some extent.
Now we are putting in a product to use a web-based interface - this is
an opportunity to use a completely new name, and the idea of charging a
25-cent fine if someone says "the 400" has been mentioned, in jest,
probably!
