The system sends out messages both in IBM i and on the HMC when the date is
getting close. If you monitor for the message, you can get the code and
update it within 5 minutes, problem gone.

Some HMC levels are supposed to be able to go out and get/apply the code for
you. I've tried to set that up and had limited success. Most times it does
not work.

It's really only needed when you update firmware.
IDK how it's supposed to "notify" me but I just check it on a quarterly
basis. Or, subtract enough days from the current expiration date to give me
time to check the maintenance contract and add that date on my calendar.

Rob, curious question. If you didn't check this, how would the system
notify you of this in advance.

I have a P8.
I am using HMC 9.

I went to ESS, "My entitled hardware", "UAK - View, Download and Request
Keys" at https://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/ess/ProtectedServlet.wss
and
requested a new key. It expires next June and gave me this long string
as
the key.

So far so good.

Now, how do I actually apply this key?

....
Argh! I keep forgetting "View" as in "View System Properties" on the
HMC
doesn't really mean just "view". It means view, update and otherwise
muck
around in here.

So I opened up my HMC 9. Go into All Systems, select the system,
Actions,
View System Properties, Capacity on Demand, CoD functions, Enter CoD
code,
and paste that new code here.
I used Systems, Action, Updates, View System Information and can see
when
the new UAK expires.

Just sharing in case anyone has to figure this out.
