I understand where you are coming from. Why should the good customer
subsidize those that do not pay.
However, the contract the customer had ALLOWED the to run the software
legally but without support. They did that per their contract and it
worked for 15 years. In the mean time the software changed hands and the
new vendor threw away that contract and changed the rules.
When the customer finally needed a small bit of support (literally about
20 small programs) they asked how much for those programs. What sort of
deal could they work out. They didn't want every feature added. They
didn't want the newest version. They didn't want to tie up the help
line. They simply needed observable versions of those programs. They
were willing to pay HANDSOMELY for them. I believe the number worked out
to well over $1,000 per program.
The vendor instead insisted on what amounted to several times that
amount and thus lost a customer.
Look even IBM occasionally offers 'grace' to those without SWMA for
example. 'Come back now and we'll forgive a significant portion of your
debt.' This keeps them in the community and lines up future revenue. Why
would you not want to do that??
In my state you register a trailer and it's good for life. Like the
contract above. Unfortunately we are likely to elect a governor who
wants to spend a crap-ton of money she doesn't have. Maybe she'll make
me pay back license for the last 15 years since I got that plate??

I paid regularly. Should my payments go to subsidize those who didn't?
In my state you cannot skip a year or so of vehicle registration without
catching up. Hey, nothing to tow that boat and too busy at this point in
your life? Want to skip a year or so registering it and it's trailer?
Well, when you go to use it you have to catch it all up.
Discounting eventually hits a law of diminishing returns. Personally I
find professional football tickets overpriced and I just won't pay it. Now
the Lions could lower their prices to attract me. Or, since they are
getting a good turnout, they could lose the margins they make on everyone
else.
