i will say that this method does work with the password, but it does not
lend itself to complete batch processing as I'd like...

but it does get connected and send the single file...

If you don't have a public key, it will prompt for a password. you can try
-o
PasswordAuthentication yes for good luck (or maybe it's just -o
PasswordAuthentication ).
