Javascript is not the same as Java...javascript has nothing at all to do
with Java.

I see no evidence on the web that either javascript in Safari nor Java on
the Mac itself has been disabled.

Are you perhaps talking about Java Applets? These are Java programs run
inside a browser. As opposed to a Java program run by the OS (such as ACS).

Most browsers disable Java applets by default now-a-days....but as far as I
know, they can still be enabled.
