If you check the client (FileZilla), etc, many have timeout values of as little as 30 seconds, or 60 seconds... - and this is hard to do when it is not remote employees but customers? There may also be timeout in your router or theirs.

They have to do a DIR to get the file names to download.

It times out long before the 300 second default, and it doesn't actually lose the connection, it just gives up retrieving the directory.
