I think the point of Diego's comment was: Surely there's something
better than manually scanning the names? Shouldn't you already have
some idea of what you are trying to find? Maybe there is a way to
narrow down the list rather than getting the whole thing. Better
still, if you know the names you're hoping or expecting to find, and
you merely have to retrieve those files if they are there, then you
don't need a listing at all.

And if you really must get a listing interactively, he's suggesting to
at least give SSH a try. I would add to that: Try using green-screen
methods (such as Qshell or PASE).

I would also add: Maybe it's time to clean up that directory. Invest
some time in setting up an automatic purge/archive script.
