Greetings. Thought I would chime in with the IBM i view of Java.

Java on IBM i as delivered through the JV1 product is not the Oracle
version of Java. You are using the IBM version of Java and you will
continue to have support as that is all covered in your IBM i support
contracts. As we look to the future of Java, our plans are to support each
of the long term version of Java. Currently that is Java 11.

Access Client Solutions (ACS) prior to version 1.1.8 will run on any
version Java. Once you are at 1.1.8 you to run on Java 8 or higher. So
this means we can and already support running on Java 9 and Java 10, etc.
Also, yes you can run on the IBM version of java. Also ACS can run on s
different version that is what is considered the default for the PC. For
details on getting the IBM version of Java follow the instructions
below....

At this point we have no plans on changing ACS to include a JVM.

IBM Java instructions.....

* Go to this website:
[1]https://developer.ibm.com/javasdk/downloads/#tab_eclipse

At some point you will need to sign into Developer works using an ID.
If you don't have one, you can create one.
* Download either the 32 or 64 bit version. The example below is for
64 bit.
I suggest using the "Download using http" tab.

For 64 bit, you will get this zip file:
IBM_DevelopmentPackage_for_Eclipse_Win_X86_64_6.3.20.zip

For the example below, I put the zip file at:
C:\IBM_DevelopmentPackage

Extract the IBM JDK using either jar or unzip, or some other zip file
extraction tool. You can extract everything, or just the ibm jre as
follows:
jar xvf IBM_DevelopmentPackage_for_Eclipse_Win_X86_64_6.3.20.zip
eclipseDevelopmentPackage/ibm_sdk80

When starting ACS, point it to the IBM JRE using the -vm parameter
from the command line:
Start_Programs\Windows_x86-64\acslaunch_win-64.exe -vm
C:\IBM_DevelopmentPackage\eclipseDevelopmentPackage\ibm_sdk80

Another piece of this puzzle.
Oracle was only referring to the Java SE in the announcement.
There is Java SDK, JRE, JVM, Java SE Runtime, and J2SE.
Most of our Java deployments are SDK or JRE.
Our IT folks conclusion is this announcement will have little or no
impact.

Rob
I think the point is that non-ibm-i-based programs like ACS currently
depend on Oracle's Java by default. IBM should start shipping ACS with
the
IBM JRE to simply the end-user's life. It's been said that we can just
place a JRE on the same folder and ACS will happily use it but, in the
five
minutes I devoted to it, I haven't been able to find a quick way to
download and install the IBM JRE...
Best Regards,
Roberto

I'm trying to connect to my IBM Web Administration for i
([18]http://myIBMi:2001/HTTPAdmin/). I'm getting this error:
ZUI_50044: IBM i user profile &1 does not have *IOSYSCFG and *ALLOBJ
authorities or has not been granted permission which is required to use
the administration interface of IBM HTTP Server for i.

I went back thru the archives and found an old discussion. It led me to
this IBM link,
[19]https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzaie/rzaieconadminwebadmin.htm.
The link talks about roles and permissions, but I don't see anything
about how to actually set them. Has anyone done this?

TIA

To your question, I'd say yes (but it might depend on exactly what you
changed). Whenever I make a big change, I consider it safer just to end
all the unused QZDASOINIT jobs.

Subject: database connection errors

We are still having problems with our WebSphere application connecting
to our iSeries at V7R1. We have all the latest groups installed.

This is what I received from our programming department manager:

Same error messages from last week from Java applications: "The
application requester cannot establish the connection. (Socket operation
on nonsocket: connect)".

PHP applications are throwing the same errors, just with different
messaging.

These applications open multiple connections, why well I do not know.
We get all sorts of application failures as it sends new request to our
iSeries for data. Each step displays a different error to the user but
the underlying error is always a connection issue.

QUESTION:
After changing a pre-start job entry for qrwtsrvr and qdazsoinit jobs,
do you have to restart the PJ for it to take affect?

Niels, very interesting! I like to learn about all the tools for legacy
modernization/transformation that are pure open source.

When you talk about "entanglement" I know what you mean, but there's
another kind of "entanglement".

There is the "entanglement" of being tied to vendor solutions!

So my goal is to service customers with as pure open source as possible
so
they can "take their toys and go home" any time they want to.

You seem to be working from the same idea.

The user profile needs to have special authorities *IOSYSCGF and *ALLOBJ
You change this via CHGUSRPRF.
(This is usually a QSECOFR task).
