I'm jumping into this thread kind of late as I've been somewhat offline for a while.

IBM i's JVM is based on the IBM J9 Java implementation.

IBM has open sourced J9 and donated it to the Eclipse foundation (https://www.eclipse.org/openj9/).

There is a Java 8 version of J9 (as well as 9 & 10).
