I have a small sign on the washing machine reminding my wife to check her

Really? Back to the now the company has to provide the device, and
maintain it.

Ever wonder why so many smartphones (all brands) are sold in the US
alone? It's almost half of the entire population of the US (325 million at
last check)

It's because people break them, lose them, soak them in water (my wife's
favorite way to get a new phone, either the washing machine or the
grand-kids pool outside). You'll bust the budget just maintaining these
devices for these types of workers. They have a phone in their personal
lives, and are more careful with them because it's their money, but the
moment it's company money, all bets are off. I'm not disparaging these
folks just reading in reality.

While I was a VP/CIO we had a traveling staff of about 70 people. We were
buying a new phone every other week to replace lost/stolen/broken phones.
And these were professional level people.

Not every problem has a technological solution. Sometimes a paper log is
the best method.

Smart phones do a good job at that. Unless you need a lot of data.

You get time and location for free.

All of this is very real world stuff.

What would be an example of heavy equipment operators writing data down
on paper? I am trying to imagine what, in today's world, that could
possibly be?
