One thing I've found that bypasses a lot of interface design on the "i" is creating my own commands. User interface? Check! Prompting? Check! Consistent User Interface? Check! Even help screens! No messing with display files and Screen Design Aid!

Making the transition from mainframe (Z-OS) COBOL to the midrange is
not that hard - he already has a great headstart. His biggest problem
will be interactive design/programs - much easier to learn on the IBM
i than the mainframe ;-)
I wouldn't say that. I've been doing interactive programming on
both the mainframe (38 years) and the IBM i (26 years). I find
interactive programming on the IBM i to be much harder. But, YMMV of
course.
