I agree, I started on the Mainframe with CICS. Once it was understood, it
was easier.
Then again I used mostly Assembler, COBOL was a luxury we did not have the
memory for most of the time.
I know I'll get gasps of horror when I say this but I wish IBM had put more
effort into the CICS on IBM i, (at the time OS/400) it might have survived.
That said in today's world so much is moving to graphical that it would not
matter in the end.

Making the transition from mainframe (Z-OS) COBOL to the midrange is
not that hard - he already has a great headstart. His biggest problem
will be interactive design/programs - much easier to learn on the IBM
i than the mainframe ;-)
I wouldn't say that. I've been doing interactive programming on
both the mainframe (38 years) and the IBM i (26 years). I find interactive
programming on the IBM i to be much harder. But, YMMV of course.
