I've worked with different migration scenarios: SAVF+FTP/SFTP (with
and without encryption), tape cartridges, VTL from DD and Image
Catalogs (Tape and Optical).
I've learned a couple of things:
1) If you have time, you can use any of them, but you need to prepare
your system. If you can create the empty LPAR with same OS + PTFs you
only need SAVSECDTA and SAVCFG (just in case)
2) VTLs from DD are amazing with 1Gb connections. You can transfer 1TB
in just 30 minutes (yes, with dedupe).
3) SAVF+FTP or SFTP works and you can perform parallel or serial
backup-transfer sets depending on your disk.
4) If you are transfering more than 1 TB use VTL or physical tape,
don't try anything else
5) Physical LTO4 or higher level are faster than VTL on Option 21.
Remember, you don't have parallel saves on Option 21
6) If you can it, use Mimix

Hi Diego

I thought that was discounted by our AIX/VIOS guys for some reason (I am
not actually that deep into VIOS) but I will go ask that question again.

Evan,

reading again your initial post: you have both tapes on the same box:
VTL and SAS Tape, but SAS Tape is attached to VIOS and NIM. Why can't
you share the LTO tape with your IBM i using VSCSI?
