I realize this is not a direct answer to your question however this is absolutely the perfect place for a flashcopy on a SAN.

It doesn't answer your question in two ways:

1) You didn't say you had a SAN
2) You can't flashcopy to the SAME partition.

We also don't know what you are doing with that copy but general uses are testing, training, development and reporting. Each of these would likely work just as well in a separate partition though.

Also as Rob mentioned elsewhere in the thread not only do you need 17TB of storage for the second copy you may also need a bucketloads of additional disk for save fields or virtual tape/optical media if you choose not to use tape. With Flashcopy you avoid nearly all of this storage even most of the second 17TB.

Again I realize I'm not directly answering your question but at the size you're discussing the various save/restore options are like comparing roller skates to inline skates and flashcopy is like a space rocket, not even a fair comparison.

We need to cut the time WAY DOWN on copying one schema to a duplicate - different named - schema on same LPAR.

Sub questions.

1. IF copying the entire schema does journaling have to be shut down?

2. Would it be faster to copy PF's/tables in a huge CL. Then rebuilding indexes/LF's off their respective tables/PF's.

Just reaching out to those who maybe have done this before. We have 17 plus tera bytes of data.
